Folklore of Éire
Ireland’s folklore is shaped by a landscape where the visible world and the Otherworld exist side by side. From ancient times, people spoke of the Aos Sí, the Good People, who dwell in mounds, hills, forests, lakes, and the thin places where the veil between realms is at its thinnest.
Stories passed down through generations tell of shapeshifters and spirit beings, heroic warriors and tragic lovers, sovereignty and sacrifice. They warn, they wonder, they teach... and they endure.
Christianity arrived on Ireland’s shores in the early medieval period, but it did not erase the older traditions. Instead, old and new beliefs intertwined, creating a rich tapestry of myth, legend, and folk belief preserved through manuscripts, oral storytelling, poetry, and song.
To explore Irish folklore is to enter a world where magic is never far from the everyday, where hills may conceal entrances to another realm, where a stranger on the road may be more than they appear, and where respect for the land and its unseen inhabitants remains one of the tradition’s most enduring themes.
